Last year, on a dusty hot summer’s day, I decided to take the slow road from Blenheim to Christchurch. Armed with my trusty little 4WD, a tent, lots of snack foods, a large swimming towel, binoculars, and a camera; I felt well prepared to enter the vast tawny landscapes of South Marlborough and explore the Molesworth Recreation Reserve – formerly a high country station - during the summer period the road is open to the public.

So Solid Energy nearly got a face full of custard … fired at them by environmental protestors at their AGM.
Solid Energy has been literally trying to put the fires out over recent months on many fronts and this latest embattlement is symptomatic of an industry that hasn’t got a future. Problems with their safety record on the extensive coal sites on the West Coast have lead to emergency measures to reduce staff incidents.

“The Mokihinui hydro scheme is the largest scale proposed flooding of public conservation land in New Zealand since the Manapouri scheme of the late 1960s and early 1970s. If approved, and constructed, it will be the largest inundation for hydro electric generation purposes of lands and ecosystems set aside for protection and conservation ever seen in this country.”…
So states DOC’s opening statements at the hearing on whether or not Meridian Energy – our so-called environmentally friendly, and State-owned energy company – can dam the pristine Mokihinui River to generate power.
